U-uh, Excuse me, kupo? What's your name, kupo?
Vivi turned and his brilliant eyes set on the white plush being known commonly as a Moogle. It made him feel like he was back home and he was instantly at ease as he turned to address the little creature. “I-I'm Vivi. Vivi Orunitia. N-nice to meet you.”
Is that what everyone calls you, kupo?
The little mage tilted his head. “W-well mostly... Vivi or The Black Mage or little or tiny mage... mostly just Vivi though...”
That's a great name for a girl, kupo! You... are a girl, aren't you, kupo?
Vivi quietly looked down and then back up at the Moogle, shaking his head, causing his hat to flop humorously. “N-no... I'm a boy...”
O-of course! I was just... messing around, kupo! Ahem. Anyway, kupo. Uh. How old are you, kupo?
The tiny mage thought about that for a moment. How to explain this... “W-well... I look like a normal kid... around nine or ten years old... b-but actually...” He thought about it. Truthfully, Vivi was at most only two years old; still an infant by most standards.
Really? Everyone lately seems to be strange, kupo... so... no offense...but what species are you, kupo?
Blinking his big yellow eyes from his clouded, shadowy face, Vivi answered softly. “U...uhm... I'm a Black Mage. C-created in Dahli for Que...er... Kuja.”
I knew that... It's just this light in here, kupo... my eyes can't focus... what do you look like, kupo?
I-interesting...Which world is your home, kupo?
The mage looked up at the stars, as if he could see his home from where he stood. “...Gaia... It's out there somewhere.”
I see... That's an interesting looking weapon, kupo. What do you call it, kupo?
Vivi held up his stave for closer inspection. “It's a stave... b-but it's just used to cast magic... I don't have much strength to fight physically...”
Cool! Do you know any attacks, kupo?
That's not bad, kupo..! Can you tell me anything about your past, kupo?
Taking a deep breath, Vivi began to explain his whole life story to the Moogle. "Y-you probably know most of this... i-if you know anything about the Mognet... b-but..."
The furthest back Vivi could remember is the months he spent with his “Grandpa,” Quan. Quan had taken him in after fishing him out of the Ocean of Mist and had planned to raise him, fatten him up, and eat him. Oblivious to this fact, Vivi, who didn't grow much in those months, spent the rest of the Qu's life as a happy companion to his “Grandpa.” When Quan died, Vivi was left alone and with no reason to remain, he left Quan's dwelling and traveled via airship to Alexandria.
Due to a faked ticket and a streetwise rat named Puck who had convinced Vivi to sneak into the show, Vivi was chased into the middle of the Tantalus' “Kidnap the Princess” scheme and became their tag along. In their haste to escape from Alexandria, their airship took major damage. After an unfortunate crash in the Evil Forest, Vivi was very frightened and didn't use his magic to defeat a carnivorous plant, causing Garnet to be captured. After they regrouped, Steiner gave Vivi the confidence to use his abilities and magic to aid him in rescuing Garnet. Before this time, Vivi seemed to not have used his latent abilities at all, so they were still fairly new and grew quite fast after he finally began using them. Vivi's true potential is unknown, like much of his past, but it was found that he has a Trance Form, like Zidane, and it increases his powers dramatically. Despite all this, Vivi retained his sense of humility and modesty, perhaps even his gullibility, to a fault. It's fair to say that Vivi doesn't always seem to be confident because of it; and lets be honest, a lot of times he's not.
After escaping the Evil Forest, leaving the Tantalus behind and continuing just the foursome of Vivi, Garnet, Steiner and Zidane, they entered an Ice Cave where he became the victim of Black Waltz No. 1's sleep spell trap and was rescued by Zidane's efforts. After they made it to Dali, Vivi was captured and put into a box like a giant doll, preparing to be shipped back to Alexandria. He had been frightened and was crying in shock. It turned out that Queen Brahne of Alexandria was commissioning these Black Mages to be made from the Mist to use as common foot soldiers, giving her an undeniable edge against any other country, who could not manufacture their soldiers as quickly.
Garnet and Steiner agreed that it would be a good idea to go back and confront her mother about the Black Mage production and her plans for war, but Zidane disagreed and thought they should go to Lindblum, their original destination, because it was safer. However, they were stalled from departing by a strange mage named Black Waltz No. 2. This Black Waltz found little Vivi amusing and taunted him, using a stronger level magic counter every time Vivi attempted to use magic against him, but not using stronger magic otherwise unless he had to, making sure Vivi knew that the reason was to show him “how magic is really done,” which was a blow to Vivi's already wilting confidence.
Getting on a cargo ship piloted by Black Mages that acted like soulless puppets, the group didn't have much time to recover from their ordeal with the second Black Waltz before being confronted by yet another, Black Waltz No. 3. Regular Black Mages step forward to defend Vivi, but the Black Waltz 3 quickly does away with them with a grand Thundaga attack, bewildering Vivi, who doesn't understand. Vivi's confusion grows into anger and he goes into Trance form. The fight wouldn't have taken long with Vivi in this form, except Waltz No. 3 was very persistent and after his first defeat, chased the group down on a commandeered airship until he lost control of it and crashed.
After a failed attempt to get Regent Cid to take measures against Queen Brahne, the foursome are invited to an event called The Festival of the Hunt. Zidane tries to get Vivi to take part in it, but Vivi didn't seem receptive to the idea of winning the prize Zidane offers. He was not girl crazy like Zidane was. Regardless, because he is so meek and accepting of whatever task put to him, Vivi entered the fray. The celebration was cut short, however, when a dying Burmecian soldier stumbled into the party.
Vivi is enlisted by Zidane to go with him and Freya to Burmecia to investigate what's going on. After the long journey, they reached Burmecia to find it in ruins, Queen Brahne standing over it proudly. She was not alone, however. She was flanked by a mysterious man named Kuja and the lovely General Beatrix. Despite their best efforts, the trio was easily bested by the seasoned warrior maiden.
Chasing the Queen and her companions to Cleyra, the group was nearly destroyed by Odin but narrowly escaped by slipping into one of the Alexandrian soldiers' teleport spells. They hid as stowaways on The Red Rose, the Queen's airship, until they reached Alexandria again. Combining forces with Beatrix and Steiner, the group rescued Garnet and tried to escape by using the Gargant at Gargan Roo.
After returning to Lindblum, the now powerless Regent Cid told the group that the Mist is coming from the Outer Continent and Kuja is the one behind all the attacks happening recently. The group heads out to find him, taking Fossil Roo to the Outer Continent.
Later, when they arrived at the Outer Continent, they found that Vivi was greeted with friendliness by the dwarf like people of Conde Petie. When the group spied a Black Mage in a shop, they had a slight panic, thinking that Queen Brahne had followed them here. However, the people here were quite familiar with the Black Mages who lived in a village nearby, "so deep in the forest that the owls don't live there."
When they reached The Black Mage Village, they saw it was true. The Black Mages here did speak and moved on their own, like Vivi, but they didn't trust Vivi and thought of him as a human because of his assocation with his commrades. It aggrivated Vivi that they were so closed minded about him and his friends. Other things occupied Vivi's mind soon after, though, as he discovered that cementary and was educated by Black Mage No. 288 about "Stopping," and the very limited one year life span of the Black Mages. Distressed, Vivi takes little comfort in the idea that he might be the "prototype" who was "built to last longer," stating that reguardless, he was going to Stop eventually.
Vivi's journey was without a doubt traumatic. Despite that, or maybe because of it, he doesn't seem to gain confidence completely ever throughout his journey, but seems to have a humbleness and modesty in accepting his mortality. He did show that he was growing mentally, however, when he wasn't gullible enough to believe Kuja when he promised that he was able to extend the life of Black Mages. Vivi has to take in a lot considering that he's only a few months old, chronologically, but he deals with it and shoulders it pretty well for a little kid, despite his humility and low self esteem.
Despite the horrible experiences, Vivi bravely pushes onwards for the truth, proving that inside the stuttering, clumsy little mage is something very strong that fights even the little one's own self doubt. Vivi is contemplative of his existence even after his defining moments on his journey, but comes to terms with it all and accepts his existence. When Zidane finally returned to Alexandria after the battle with Kuja was won, Vivi had already “Stopped,” and had left behind several “children” who resembled him. The final words he spoke were, "Farewell. My memories will be part of the sky."
Though it seemed like Vivi's story was over, his chapter in life read and closed, it was fate that had a different plan. Vivi found himself reborn, or perhaps merely revived, on a small world where the sun always seemed to be just on the horizon. In this world, the people seemed not to see him as a mage, but as a little child. He had even been accepted into a group, like before, and had all but forgotten his traumatic past, when the Heartless began appearing. These creatures, staring at him with large golden eyes from inside familiar dark and shadowy faces, pulled forward memories Vivi had resisted. His “Children,” his friends and the journey they had shared... Vivi found his curiosity once again provoked. Why had he been revived and allowed to live?
Hmm... well, could you tell me what kind of person you are, kupo?
Vivi thought about it for a moment as he wasn't used to talking about himself. He is naturally the quiet kid in the back of the class. His grades would be good, because he's pretty mature about getting things done, but he isn't very social and is more of a follower than a leader. The little black mage stutters, which shows that he is uncertain that what he has to say is of value. Being small in stature, it's easy to overlook Vivi; it doesn't help that he acts small and timid. Though not as gullible as when he first started on his journey with Zidane and the group, he's still young and has the attributes of a child when it comes to understanding things.
"U-um... well... there's not much to say...I'm... k-kinda quiet and shy...b-but I'm not afraid of facing bad things..." he stuttered as he went on, trying to keep a balanced description of himself, neither boastful nor pitiful.
Being the youngest of the group in all situations (he's the youngest playable Final Fantasy character to date), it can also be said that Vivi is very mature for his age. Though he doesn't always understand what's going on, he does his best to understand, but often meekly accepts his friend's explanations and orders. When Vivi first met Zidane's group, he wouldn't use his powers at all because he lacked the confidence. Always curiously questioning his origins and his purpose, Vivi pushes forward through the hardships they all faced. With help and a confidence boost, Vivi is able to use his powers and even grow them. Though he is still timid and growing (well, mentally at least...), Vivi is a good kid and does his best to help in every situation, even if he is a little clumsy.
...Oh, kupo... Then... what side do you fight for, kupo?[/color][/b]
Vivi's eyes lit up and he smiled, even though the Moogle could not see it. "L-light. Light, h-hope and good."
I don't mean to seem like I'm prying, but what dreams and aspirations do you have, kupo?
The littlest mage thought quietly for a moment. "... I... I don't really have any aspir...aspirations... I'm kinda happy how I am. B-but if I had a dream, it would be to go back home with the Mage Children and all my friends. I... feel like I'm home when I'm with them."
Ah, that makes sense, kupo... sorta... well, what do you like, kupo?
The tiny mage looked down at his hands. "W-well... I like things that... make me happy... a-and... there are lots of things that make me happy. I am happy every day I get to wake up and see all my friends. I’m happy when Quina makes me dinner similar to what Grandpa Quan used to make.
I also feel happy when Zidane comes to find me to take me on another adventure. It doesn’t happen very often anymore, since he came back and Queen Garnet was so worried about him before. I’m also really happy when I get to see the Black Mage Children again. They make me feel good… like there’s hope. It’s hard to explain." He turned his glowing eyes back up to the Moogle before adjusting his hat and letting the conversation fall into a nervous silence.
Me too! Then, what do you dislike, kupo?
Vivi didn't have to think too hard about this one... "I-I'm not picky about m-most things... b-but I don't like... cruel people or... or senseless violence."
I'll remember that... what's your weakness, kupo?
"U...Uhm... w-well in fighting... I guess my weakness would be that I'm kind of a clumsy kid... so I'm not strong or anything... A-and Eiko said... my shyness is a weakness too..."
N-not that I'd ever attempt to use that against you or anything, kupo...! Er... next question! W-what is your strength, kupo?
"M-my magic... I-I'm a Black Mage... One of a very few left on Gaia... so there aren't many people who can wield magic like me... W-well... I guess most people would say that's my strength... But I think my strength... is that I ... I'm not afraid. Well... I get scared... b-but I face sorrow... I don't run from it."
I never would have guessed, kupo! So, tell me, kupo.. What's the secret password, kupo?

Ah, well I am afraid I must go, kupo. One last question before I do, kupo. How did you find your way here, kupo?
